About the Debbie Green Memorial 5K
The story began in 1970, when seven-year-old Debbie Green of Benwood, WV
was diagnosed with
leukemia. Her family held a benefit called "Debbie Green Day" to support
Debbie during her courageous battle against cancer. Unfortunately, Debbie
lost her battle after two years, passing away in 1972 – but hope
and support lives on through the Debbie Green Memorial 5K.
Since the 1990s, the Debbie Green Memorial 5K Run / Walk for Leukemia has
grown to be one of the most popular racing events in the region. The first-class
running event starts and ends in Wheeling's beautiful Heritage Port
and is a fast course that attracts running talent locally, nationally,
and even globally.
Not everyone has to compete, however! The 5K includes a walk for those
who want to raise the funds without pulling the muscles. Along with the
5K, the event includes the "Green Mile," a one-mile race with
pizza, awards, door prizes and music. Children can also take part in the
event by running "Debbie's Dash," a 100-yard dash for children
ages 9 and under.
