Types of Chemical Exposures and How to Prevent Them

Posted By Hartley Law Group, PLLC || 7-Oct-2014

How can you be exposed to dangerous chemicals?

You may encounter any number of hazardous chemicals while on the job or at home. Safety education, training, warning labels, and instructions are readily available and required by law in most circumstances. Understanding the general principles of chemical exposure and prevention may not only help you protect yourself from harm, it may also help you in a case against a negligent company or employer.

There are a few ways you can be exposed to hazardous chemicals, including:

  • Absorption
  • Ingestion
  • Inhalation
  • Injection

You may encounter one or more of these types of exposures in the workplace or at home. Hazardous chemicals may be airborne, on surfaces, or in contaminated liquids and solids. You may be exposed to these chemicals by breathing them in, absorbing them through your skin, ingesting them in contaminated food or drink, or from scratching or piercing your skin.

Take Proper Preventive Measures Against Exposure

It is important to be able to identify potential hazards as well as the precautions to take in preventing them. Proper hazard identification and exposure prevention may help to ensure the safety of you and your loved ones. If you have been exposed to a dangerous chemical and the exposure resulted from another party's negligent action, consult an attorney and take steps to ensure you receive compensation for damages.

There are several preventive measures you may take against chemical exposure, such as:

  • Good ventilation of work area/home
  • Personal respirators
  • Careful storage of food/goods
  • Good hygiene
  • Safety clothing/protective equipment
  • Care in handling objects

For more information on hazardous chemical exposure and protection, access the resources of the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA).
