Hartley Law Group, PLLC is pleased to announce that the firm is donating $500,000 to the West
Virginia University Cancer Institute towards the purchase of a mobile
lung cancer screening unit. Known as the “Lung Bus,” the mobile
unit’s goal is to provide screenings for
lung cancer throughout West Virginia and help decrease lung cancer mortality and improve
early diagnosis of lung cancer.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of deaths in West Virginia; approximately
2,003 people are diagnosed and 1,507 die each year because of it. As a
whole, the state has a higher rate of lung cancer than the nation, due
to a combination of lifestyle, economic, social, and environmental factors.
While pollution from strip mining and underground coal mining is known
to cause cancer, experts argue that the biggest issue is lack of access
to care—whether it’s preventative screening or cancer treatment.
We hope to make a difference with the Lung Bus against the battle for cancer
in the region.
