How Can Mesothelioma Be Treated?
West Virginia Attorney for Mesothelioma Cases
The state of treatment options for mesothelioma is not very encouraging at the time of this writing. Early treatment of mesothelioma has had a slightly better result with the advent of some improvements in new chemotherapy and multimodal treatment regimens, but actual cures are few and far between.
Treatment options include:
- Surgery to remove the lining of the chest, or removal of the lung, the lining of the inside of the chest, the pericardium, and the hemidiaphragm are removed
- Surgery followed by radiation of the hemithorax, combined with chemotherapy
- Immunotherapy treatment regimens, with interferon-alpha treatment trials, may be encouraging
- Multimodality therapy treatments include a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy
Treatment Options for Mesothelioma
If have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, it is imperative that you find a skilled physician who is a specialist in treating mesothelioma patients. Depending upon your diagnosis, and what stage your cancer has advanced to, your treatment will most definitely vary. If cancer has not significantly spread, and you are deemed to be healthy enough to undergo surgery, a treatment of surgery followed by radiation and chemotherapy will most likely be the treatment offered. If cancer has unfortunately spread, then your option will most likely include chemotherapy and radiation to manage cancer, but will probably not include surgery.
With the advent of better diagnostic tools, more effective chemotherapy combinations of medicines, and improvement in surgical techniques coming into being each year, there is some progress being made in the treatment of mesothelioma. Survivors have been reported to be living 2 to 4 years and longer through current treatments. In some cases, survivors are even living over 10 years more with certain types of medical intervention.
