Da Vinci Robotic Surgery: Medical Marvel or Medical Menace?

One of the hottest trends in medicine over the last decade has been the rise of minimally-invasive robotic surgery. As of March 31, 2014, there were 2,116 da Vinci Surgical Systems installed in United States health care facilities and there are currently 11 facilities in West Virginia that have da Vinci Surgical Systems.

Intuitive Surgical, Inc., the company that manufactures the da Vinci robots aggressively markets its surgical robots as safe, effective, and superior to traditional open surgical procedures or other minimally-invasive surgical procedures such as laparoscopy. However, much speculation surrounds the da Vinci robots: studies have indicated that robotic surgeries offer no better results than alternative surgical procedures albeit at a premium price; lawsuits have been filed against Intuitive Surgical, Inc. alleging that the da Vinci Surgical System has caused severe injuries and even death to patients undergoing robotic surgeries; and the FDA has cracked down on Intuitive Surgical, Inc. for failing to report adverse events associated with its products and for engaging in a secret recall of accessory tip covers that caused patient injuries such as intra-operative thermal burns. One thing is clear, Intuitive Surgical, Inc. has failed to disclose important information to patients, doctors, hospitals, and the FDA.
